Família de roedores [ordem Rodentia, com 250 gêneros, inclusive os Mus (CAMUNDONGOS) e Rattus (RATOS)], a partir dos quais as linhagens laboratoriais endogâmicas são desenvolvidas. As quinze subfamílias são: SIGMODONTINAE (camundongos e ratos do Novo Mundo), CRICETINAE, Spalacinae, Myospalacinae, Lophiomyinae, ARVICOLINAE, Platacanthomyinae, Nesomyinae, Otomyinae, Rhizomyinae, GERBILLINAE, Dendromurinae, Cricetomyinae, MURINAE (Camundongos e ratos do Velho Mundo) e Hydromyinae.Fonte: DeCS.
